Where can I find out about whether there are any grants available for tree
planting ?

Try the forestry commision.

You can get quite substantial grants. And (I'm told) income from
woodlands isn't taxable, and there are inheritance advantages.

It all depends on what sort of area of plantation you're thinking of.
The Forestry commission will let you know the score.
