This year's crop is now brought in and drying off in trays in the
conservatory.

Last year after the frost on 12 May the tree lost its leaves as well as
its fruit/flowers. It grew more leaves and seems to have fully recovered
from the shock.

This years crop is very similar to that two years ago, slightly below
average in nut size and quantity. Despite the advice given in URG that
it would be better to pickle the nuts then as the weather had been so
bad that they would not store we did keep them. In fact when we knew
that there would be no crop last year we kept a few until last Christmas
when they were fine.

It was true however that the proportion of the 2009 crop we had to throw
away was higher than for the previous year  which had been a bumper
crop. So the advice based on our experience might read "consider
pickling your walnuts if the weather suggests it and anyway be aware
that it is likely that fewer of the nuts will store well after a poor
summer for walnuts".

For the record last night was the first autumn frost severe enough to
leave ice on the car windows here in East Hampshire not far from
Petersfield.

How about shelling and freezing them? Then you'd have a more versatile
use.

No I had not thought of that. My first thoughts are that both time and
freezer space are precious at this time of year and they store well
naturally without much effort. Thanks for the suggestion, I will
remember it if we ever want to do more than crack and eat a few nuts now
and then.
