We have the most lovely deep wine-red iris flowering near a pond this
year.  Nobody has planted it there, it's simply appeared.  Do they
'wander', seed themselves and then, over years, produce flowers?  This
one's a total mystery but a very nice one.

We have Bay Trees which do that, a Yew appeared from nowhere.  I don't think
anybody planted a bed of Day Lilies which come up each year. They have to be
cut back because they fall all over the path :-((

I expect everybody who gardens has strange/odd/not planted flowers which
come up. I don't expect it is confined to you only ;-)

I don't know about cultivated varieties but in our immediate area the
Stinking iris (or Gladdon), Iris foetidissima, turns up very
frequently and thrives in areas of shade, to the extent that it can be
a bit of a nuisance, even in our wildlife part of the garden.  I
assume that it spreads far and wide due to the attractiveness of its
orange/red seeds which the birds seem to enjoy.

I didn't think I ever sent you any of our "Hells Fire" but that's what it
sounds like if it's a Tall Bearded Iris (flag).

I don't think you have, either, Bob.  But the thing is that if you had,
one of us would remember planting it there.  I love iris but Ray always
says they don't do well here, so he wouldn't have bought it and put it
in and certainly not one alone.  We get plenty of other things that
volunteer all over the garden, to our great pleasure, but I've never
known this kind of iris do it and indeed, we don't have it anywhere
else in the garden or car park borders.  I'm beginning to think we've
been 'guerilla gardener-ed'!  I'll take a photo of it and see how it
compares to that beautiful one you've shown.
