Replacing 'Autumn Bliss' Raspberries

 For the third year in row, my Autumn Bliss raspberries look to giving a
poor crop. They are 9 years old and I think I ought to be planning their
successors.

Things I know:

· I like autumn fruiting raspberries for their easy cultivation, fairly
short plants, etc.
· I will put new plants in a fresh bed.
· 9 year old plants are probably past it.

Things I don't know:

· Is there a "better" autumn fruiting variety available nowadays?
· Best way to kill off the old bed so I can plant out tomatoes next May?

Suggestions?

Joan J is my favourite - Heavy crop of. big well shaped perfect fruit,
good flavour. As trouble free as you can get and a long cropping
period.
As with all autumn raspberries it gets knocked about by bad weather so
some support helps if you have the time.
Dig out what you can of the old ones now and a couple of sprays of
Roundup next spring should clean your bed up sufficiently for
following crops.

I don't know about "better" than Autumn Bliss because I'm not familiar with
the variety, but late last year we planted a row of "Polka' which I believe
is a fairly new variety, and I have to say that we are highly delighted with
them.
Big fruit, big crop, big taste..... even in it's first season here.
