It's been a little breezy but dry and with some nice spells of
sunshine. Some people even had lunch and tea on the lawn and it feels
warmer than yesterday. But leaves are certainly just beginning to fall
in small numbers while I'm delighted to see buds on the Camellias!

Strange, the leaves on the Red Oak, Silver Birch, Mountain Ash and Ash
have almost all come off now, but the English Oak are still in full
green leaf, some even with new shoots.
We have honey suckle in flower, and Weigelia Bristol Ruby is in full
flower, in fact it has much more than in the spring as the Bull
Finches havn't been at the buds.
Things are so crazy here that the last 2 days with its rain the ground
has dried more than it did in that heatwave we just had.

I think the change of seasons has also swapped over the two ends of
the Bay - David's end now seems dryer than this one.
I've been enjoying a mostly dull day (little sun and the occasional
spot of precipitation from above) by digging up a couple of patches of
those Spanish "bluebells" that appeared in the garden last year but I
didn't do anything about. They've now been replaced with about 60
little native bluebell bulbs (properly sourced before anyone
complains).
I have a large whitebeam that is always late to leaf and early to drop
and which has kept me busy collecting leaves the last few weeks. 'Twas
enough to persuade me to invest in a leaf blower attachment for my
petrol multitool. Only a few leaves left hanging for their lives now.
Birch and hornbeam have been shedding slowly for a week or so. Apples
are bare though pears, cherries and plums are still in full leaf and
showing no signs of browning. I shifted some tubs around today and
discovered that last year's hyacinths are still very green and leafy
- no sign of dying down. I wonder what I should do with them.
The other thing I discovered today was my own forgetfulness! I forgot
to protect the vine. Some lovely sweet white grapes left but not
enough to do anything with. Damned blackbird!
Cheers, Jake

>Damned blackbird!
Is it black, with a yellow beak? Sometimes seen with a browner version?
If so, I reckon its the same one that eats all my blueberries. They
really get about!

I haven't taken too much notice of the foliage around here, but theQuercus
Rubra planted in the memory of a former greenkeeper at our local golf club
still bears green leaves. I'm hoping they will redden soon for me to
photograph the tree.
