I haven't seen one in our garden for about 3 years. The caterpillar it
produces is huge and has false eyes at each end, to discourage birds!! IIRC
both adult and caterpillar had a liking for a fuchsia bush.

I kept one of those huge caterpillars when I was about four. I still
remember the amount of effort I needed to gather a fresh willowherb
every day. It was my great achievement and really upset me when it
flew away.

Well done you lucky photographer:-)

I've only ever seen one once, and then I didn't have time to get my camera.
A pal of mine saw one and thought it /was/ a humming bird.
