What do the experts on this NG think. Onion white rot perhaps?

I don't think it's white rot, the base of the bulb looks well enough.
Possibly rust.

If you are right, what do I do now? As it is the foliage is dying
fast. Leave them in the ground, or lift them and store them for as long
as they will keep, which I understand won't be long.
