My Clematis freckles has been flowering for the last month
and is now almost over. I don't know why this is happening
and I feel rather worried. Isn't this a December-January
type Clematis?

The plant is confused by the cooler weather. I haven't seen any flowers
on my Clematis cirrhosa recently, but yesterday I noticed a few flowers
on the Clematis alpina, which flowered in April.
As soon as we get a few hot days it'll stop flowering, and rest until
the next flowering period this coming winter.

My montana didn't flower this year, either. But that may be to do with it
being entwined with the hop and Nick doing some removal at an unsensible
time.
Awful lot of growth on it atm, though.

There isn't always much option. I have just cut my Berberis vulgaris
back by (not to) 70%, which will reduce the berries later and the flowers
and berries next year. But I drew the line at such a major and tricky
project in the winter, and it was a case of it or us :-)
Regards,
Nick Maclaren.

Fret not, this cultivar often does this which is one of the reasons it is so
widely planted, you are correct cirrhosa normally flowers in winter, the
summer flowers are a bonus!
