Walking in our mini arboretum late this afternoon, we visited the above
tree, aka Katsura. The leaves are falling and the gorgeous smell of
caramel/toffee coming from them has to be experienced to be believed.

Indeed. I was in Nymans a couple of days ago on a very hot day, and in
a small grove of C. japonicum, where many leaves were on the ground. A
notice pointed out the smell as that associated with Candy Floss.

This is on my plant list, actually, the weeping version. I've been
waiting to get some more shade for it, I understand it burns quite badly
in full sun. Is that your experience?

I haven't grown it. Most of the plants I've seen have been moderately
small, and so have been at least partially shaded by other trees. But
according to various sources, it can grow to around 15m in cultivation,
and 45m in the wild. On that basis, it would be well above any shade,
and must be able to withstand full sun. But it appears to not like cold
winds, so perhaps it is shelter rather than shade that it needs.

It was Geoff Hamilton's favourite tree. "They" planted one at
Barnsdale next to a seat. I remember smelling that one, as I was
there at the right time. Last year I was hit by the smell of one at
Wisley by the demonstration gardens.
