We've tried growing broccoli on our allotment for two years now (from
seed) and although they grow fine we cannot seem to get ones with nice
big heads (as seen in supermarkets).
The two varieties we've tried are:-
Wilko's Autumn Calabrese (packet says Quick growing with fine heads)
and
Suttons's Calabreese Autumn Spear (the packet pitures fine heads but
granted - the name does say "spear")
Any advice as to variety and planting to get large head broccoli
appreciated.
Thank you.

Dave. You will no doubt know I am not a gardener, it's announced enough
times on here, BUT, I believe your problem 'might' be unstable soil. By that
I mean it might have been worked with spade, fork and rake etc but the roots
are going down into aerated soil and not the firm stuff.
Therefore I believe the secret is to 'firm' the soil.
Hope that helps
Mike

I cannot be the only one to see the irony of the id first person to
reply to a post with the words 'big head' in the subject line. An
unawareness of irony lesson to urg's persistent and boastful Corvid
troll. It couldn't be more perfect!

and being so perfect yourself, I would have thought that by now you would
know how to spell Crow and my name which is Crowe. You should know, you give
me sufficient publicity .... thank you. :-))
I wonder if your family know about your postings. I think I may have to
write to them :-))
