every year i have bought onion sets and have had a reasonable success rate but i am considering, for the coming year, growing from seed. has anyone any experience of this and can advise me of the advantages and the disadvantages.- and, perhaps, suggest any particular variety? i have looke4d at the on-line catalogues but can't really - 4
i don't know that plant but it is certainly an onion of some sort. see the little bulbs forming where the flowers are? garlic and some onions do that. the fact that it smells like an onion pretty much confirms it. steve href "http://s 58.photobucket.com/albums/hh 46/allabouteve1 /?action view¤t snowdrops4.jpg" href - 3
onion s are a year plant - so if you plant seeds this year at the end of the growing season you will have small onions. if you harvest them and hang them to dry you will have onion sets to plant the next year. some people also start seeds in boxes and when they are scallion size they transplant them. we use the cooperative - 3
especially with french onion soup, though, "fond is your friend". you don't want the onion to brown quickly, you want them to caramelize long and slow so that most of the water has evaporated. you start with a really big amount of onion, and end with a greatly reduced, highly concentrated volume of tastiness. just - 3
i use a non-stick pot to brown my onion s, either for soup or quiche. no caramelized onion flavor left in pot and onions seem to brown more quickly than in an enameled or iron pan. - 3
i have a tiny book put out from hints and tips from abc radio listeners and it says that the way to get rid of onion weed is to slice a tomato and lay the slices on top of the onion weed. i've never had onion weed so other than this seemingly improbable tip, i can't offer a thing by way of advice. - 3
something i have noticed, with my own cats. cats do not like onion s. occasionally they will come looking to see if they can get a tidbit while i am cooking. i'll tell them that kittys don't like onions, and offer to let them sniff. they always scrinch up their noses and squint their eyes and back up a step or two. maybe run some - 3
lay off means to lay out the rows. onion sets are already started plants or small onions as opposed to seeds. as far as a book i would like to know myself. i do remember the farmers almanac was kept forever. there wasn't a whole lot around to read except it and the sears & roebuck catalog and the rare newspaper, when they made - 2
commercially known as weed-b-gone. i`ts expensive as hell if you buy it retail. i recommend a company called agri-supply, it`s a third of the cost and you can hose down the entire lawn as it does`nt harm grass. it is a contact herbicide so the onion has to be up for it to be effective. remember to thatch and re-seed when the onion dies. - 2
garden mix (at about $50.00 per ton) i got this from a very reputable supplier, thinking it would be "weed" free. every where i have put this "soil", heaps of onion weed has come up and is thriving! i have notified the supplier of the problem,to see what they have to say,but what is the best way to get rid if - 2
