Something got one of my cats sick - liver problem, like he'd been
poisoned, and there was some kind of lesions on the tongue. The yard
is fenced in so they can't get out; it was something in the house or
yard. The only thing I saw out of the ordinary was a lot of mold on
surface roots of a dead tree under the deck. It has been raining a ton
around here for all of June but I never saw anything like this. It
looked like it had been snowing under the deck.
I spend an afternoon cleaning out all the mold I could find and
digging out those roots where I could, then I put down the weed
blocker stuff so none of the cats can get to whatever is left.
The Vet thinks it could have been the mold so that's the working
hypothesis, but I can't find anything about cats being affected by
white mold, only the black stuff.
Anyway, I thought I'd mention it here so maybe someone else can avoid
this problem. I really like that cat and, while he is getting better
and is almost back to normal, it wasn't cheap.

"Weed blocker stuff" isn't going to do a thing to mold. Mold isn't a weed.
Hell, it isn't even a plant.

If it's been raining there, like you say, it could also be a mushroom. It
could be anything.

I didn't mean the weed blocker would prevent the mold; in fact I'm a
bit worried that blocking the light will create more of it. It is just
a physical barrier preventing the felines from getting to the mold. I
will check under it to make sure the mold isn't getting out of
control. I would have used a regular tarp but I don't want standing
water there either. Mosquitos are bad enough as it is. I think we have
those Tiger mosquitos that bite all day long.
I'm hoping that it stops raining at some point during the summer and
things can dry out. It rained this morning and thunderstorms are
predicted for this afternoon. At least they won't be telling us that
we can't water the lawn or wash the car.
