I've got a rose bush that is over thirty years old. Problem is taht
grass is overtaking the bush and is impossible to pull out of or trim to
the ground within the bush. I wish the grass grew as well, in the rest
of the yard.
Any ideas?

I do'nt know much about rose bushes but can You get a fabric or
plywood skirt around the base that extends to a point that You can mow
to? Watering could be a problem unless the skirt material would allow
rain to soak in..

They make a post-emergence grass killer that is relatively safe to use
under roses (plus many other plants). Pennington Pride is one brand.
But you may have to wait until next year to use it since it has to be
applied in the spring when the grass is less than 8" tall.
They also make a pre-emergence grass preventer for use under roses,
but it will not control already growing grasses.
