I own a Black & Decker "Leaf Hog" that I purchased a couple of years ago,
an electric appliance that has both blowing and vacuun capability. I don't
use it very much, in fact I only use it once or twice a year when the
leaves fall. Today I was using it and it did fine until I switched it from
"low" speed to "high," then after a few minutes it didn't run as good, it
made a weird noise and a weird smell started coming from it. Also a small
white "light" when you look inside it that I didn't notice before. I was
just about through with my leaf-blowing project so I just turned it off and
put it up.
Does it sound like this thing a total loss or is there anything I can do to
repair it? I only paid $60 for it but I'm not in the mood to invest in
another leaf blower, especially when I don't use it that much.
Maybe I don't have a heavy duty-enough extension cord (I bought it
separately) and that caused the motor to burn out when I put it in high
mode. But I remember making sure the extension cord could carry enough amps
that were recommended on the outside of the Leaf Hog box when I bought it.
The cord has a ground prong when you plug it in, but the female end that
you plug into the blower doesn't ground.

It is a disposable unit. Any service dept is going to charge you at
least $50 to look at plust any repair costs. There may not even be any
parts available for it. Just keep using it till it goes up in a puff of
smoke then replace it. You should consider buying a better unit that
will last longer this time around.

The Toro with the metal impeller is a good consumer unit. Last time I looked
was under $80 at Amazon.
I have one and am very happy with it.

I realize that, I didn't say I was considering paying someone to service it.

Yeah at least one that won't screw up the fifth time you use it.

you got 5 uses out of that? we only got 3 uses out of our
Black & Decker sweeper stick.
