cat deterrents

 Does anyone have any good ideas for stopping cats messing in the garden.

There is an ultrasonic device on the market that has 3 settings one of which
is for cats, costs about £40. There are also some water pistols combined
with PIRs which spray the blighters with water when they approach, mind you
it will also be triggered by you and your family so be warned.  :-)
A powerful water pistol does also chase them away but you have to be there
waiting so it's not a good permanent deterrent as they will just ensure you
aren't around.
With the water things it's best to tell the owners what you intend to do so
they know what's happened when their cat comes home wet, unfortunately,
other than keeping them locked in permanently there isn't much an owner can
do once the cat is used to craping outside.

Physically shoo-ing them away works in time because they are creatures of
habit who patrol a regular course until someone persuades them to change the
route.

A cheap instead/as well plan is to put a squeeze of lemon juice where they
like to do it. The stuff that comes in plastic lemons works as well as juice
straight from a lemon.

This needs renewing from time to time but it does work.

 Thanks for the input guys.  I have heard of these things before but someone
told me recently that orange peel scattered about the garden deters them. I
dont know how effective this is though.

 

That sort-of works but is unsightly. That's why I recommend the juice of
lemons.
