My neighbours have a huge tree in their garden and I have little tree-like
things growing up in my lawn which look like the same leaf so I assume
that's where they are coming from. Not being a gardener I have no idea if I
can save my lawn from these things taking over, or is there anyway I can
kill off these roots, if that's what they are, without damaging the tree?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

There are several posssibilities the tree is sending out suckers ( Aspen
Poplar etc) in which case you can mow them off quite happily- systemic
weedkillers are out of the question as they are likely to damage the host
tree. Alternatively it could just be seeding your lawn ( yew ash etc) in
which case painting them with glyphosate or similar will kill them down to
the root. You really need to find out what species of tree it is before
attacking the problem.
