I have a lot of underlying dead thatch in my lawn and have been told to use
a scarifier/lawnrake. I have now aquired one but would appreciate some
advice on the following:
1. What time of the year is it best to do this? or can it be done any
time?
2. Is it advisable to mow the lawn first?
I would appreciate some guidance on this from the experts, many thanks.

Hi Brian,
I would suggest that the lawn is mowed first. This way the raking won't
break you back. We do it every so often and if you're going to do it by
hand, do it during the growing season, so that the grass has a chance to
recouperate.
If you're going to do it mechanically, I would definitely suggest between
April and September/October, again to allow for recouperation.
Check out our website for more information and I will be sure to updaye our
gardening section to include stuff about lawns (or green areas with clover
and daisies in our case)
