Hi
Just looking for some advice on my composter. I started it two years ago
this summer. I've added grass clippings, kitchen waste and general green
waste from the garden. Basically what was mentioned in the leaflet when I
was given the composter.
I've never taken anything out of the composter as it's seems very wet when I
open the hatch. Today I cut the lawn for the first time this year and it's
filled the composter for the first time, and this is only the start of the
season.
Any ideas on why the composter doesn't seem to be composting? Behind the
hatch I can still make out the leaves that I put in there winter before
last.
Cheers

Some leaves like chestnut and beech take ages to break down. Another
factor is where it is located. My compost bin used to be in the shade.
In the summer it kept rotting down at the same rate as I was adding
stuff, but in the winter it ground to a halt. When I rearranged the
garden it finished up, by chance, in a sunny spot. Even in winter it
still rots down fairly well.
I've been told that it is good to add some source of carbon along with
the green stuff. I use shredded paper which works well. Whole sheets
just seem to make a separate layer which doesn't rot.

This is my problem. It,s ok during the summer but because of the shade it
slows right down during the summer. Think I might give the shredded paper a
try.
Thanks for the advice
