Was told that it is a good idea to cram as many bulbs as possible into a pot
for the best effect; but I think it would not give the bulbs a chance to
grow properly.  What do you think?

"Margret" ...

You are correct, it gives a good display but doesn't give the bulbs enough
room/nutrients to make up a good bulb for the next year. A throwaway spring
display.
You can separate and plant the bulbs out in the garden "in the green" as
soon as the flowers are over but make sure they are planted at a good depth,
3 times the height on the bulb. They may not flower next year but will the
following years in the garden.

Yes its ok to do it to them just feed properly, pot them on or plant in
the garden after flowering and regularly feed till the leaves die down.

Some plants such as Agapanthus like close planting and being pot bond as
it improves the flowering.
