i have several guides (all of which are for canberra! so i'm not sure that's
any help, but rather, somethign of a guide).
one says nothing can be planted in may. (i personally think this lacks
imagination, but there you are!)
one says peas, garlic, broad beans and onions, all from seed (i.e.. sow the
seed in may - although for garlic i assume they mean cloves, not seed
(??) ). peas are frost-proof but the flowers are NOT, so take care if you
get frosts.
the last one agrees with the second and mentions it might be a good time to
sow a green manure crop of legumes, to dig in in spring before it flowers.
speaking purely for myself, in late april, i put in turnips, leeks, carrots,
onions, radish, spring onions, peas, sugar snap peas, parsnips, silverbeet,
winter spinach, beetroot and some lettuce, (all of which are up now although
i got them in a bit late). if you have a warmish winter where you are, any
of these might be worth trying, particularly if you have access to
seedlings. i know i was a little late myself on some counts, but nothing
ventured, nothing gained. :-) in areas with clear & non-negotiable seasons
(like we have here in canberra) you're really expected not to do much of
anything at all in may & june, until pruning time! :-)
hth a bit
