melbourne has several million people. of COURSE someone wants them.
freecycle (as mentioned). donate to local op shop/2nd hand shop/general
stuff & building supplies shop. donate to local school/church/hospital fete
for sale or use. leave on nature strip (should disappear within hours).
local school or other organisation that has a garden & needs supplies. etc
etc etc.

I tried that, they have some weird prohibition against giving away plants or
plant-related materials.

No they don't, Melbourne Oz has two groups, one for items that impact on
landfil (pot are allowed) and the other for low impact items and non
tangibles etc.
I'm the owner mod of MFC, hundreds of pots have been given on the group.
