Naah, but I have spent a few nights in house with them regular visitors
where the quiet was often broken by the snap of a trap, or 2 or so...

I thought of them when I read your first para. You could also use dry sand
or even bran which was an old fashioned storage method. Inspect often.

Metal fly mesh is still around but in fewer and fewr places. And I think a
rat could eat it anyway.
Sheet metal with nail holes pumched in it would work too or very fine bird
cage wire.
