How do you know you have one mouse not a whole tribe? If you do catch them
alive who will you inflict them on? Leaving that aside you can rig your
trap so that the mouse cannot get the food without tripping it. Use a small
bit of raw bacon that just fits on to the trigger. Push it on firmly and
then let it dry in the sun for a couple of days where the mouse (cat, dog,
child) cannot get it, you will find it sets hard and is very difficult to
remove. Then set the trap as usual.

I like to use a bit of string in a knot on the treadle with peanut
butter rubbed in well. They try to take the string.
